San Diego Naval Shipyard

The San Diego Navy Shipyard, otherwise known as the Naval Base San Diego, has long history of asbestos use dating back to 1918. During the shipyard’s highest peak during the the 1940s, over 5,000 ships were repaired, overhauled, and manufactured.

In several of the shipyard’s buildings, investigations uncovered that the facilities were littered with asbestos. Even though the shipyard hasn’t used asbestos in several decades, tons of asbestos was found scattered across several units.

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO)

San Diego’s NASSCO was used to build and repair ships with many asbestos products from the early 1900s until the 1970s. Typical products that contained asbestos ranged from tiles, pipes, compounds, plaster, epoxies, and many more. In addition to mechanics handling these products, numerous contractors worked as installers at the shipyard and were therefore exposed to dangerous asbestos fibers.

Several lawsuits surfaced after employees and contractors came forward after being diagnosed with mesothelioma and asbestosis. In one particular case, an employee sued the shipyard’s manufacturer after his wife developed mesothelioma via second-hand exposure.

The Shipyard’s Worker Union also filed a lawsuit against the shipyard for unfair labor practices after the company refused to allow a new health inspector to join the union and assess the health risks associated at the job site.
